WebMay 14, 2016 · I've been riding a Crosscheck for years and built up a Wolverine for a customer. Both bikes were built up as pavement preferred, mixed surface capable touring bikes with racks and fenders. The Soma was built with a belt driven NuVinci IGH and the CC is a standard 3x9 Shimano. 35mm tires on the Soma, 47mm on the CC. I like my CC better. WebSurly designed the Cross-Check to be versatile, while still performing well as an entry-level race bike. If cyclocross racing isn’t for you, this bike is just as much at home on the pavement or a gravel trail as it is in the mud of a ‘cross course. I have ridden the Surly Cross-Check in a variety of configurations.

Depending how much of a load you're going to carry, a Cross-Check may not be your ideal. The Cross-Check doesn't have provisions for mounting a front rack and panniers; the LHT does. The Cross-Check is a road-bike/'cross bike; the LHT is optimized more for loaded touring and hauling stuff.

Since I ride a 54/55cm Cross Check/Macho Man (respectively) it's clear that the Macho Man has a slightly better geometry for my proportions.
